As a nurse, it was important me to give a medical mission trip a try.
It can be discouraging when working bedside at times. Nurses are constantly belittled, disregarded and feel unappreciated.
A medical mission trip is for the type of person who can show true compassion and has a volunteer spirit.
It’s definitely not for you , if you only want to go for photo opportunities.
Let me tell you how it was for me.
I went on my trip in the fall of 2021 arranged by Nurses with Purpose, a nurse owned organization. The whole process was smooth.
Had a driver for pickup at the airport.
Once all the team arrived, we had our intros and sorted out donations, to get ready to work in the communities.
The work days were enjoyable. How? … The staff members were inviting and appreciated the help. The people we served in the community were impeccable. Although some of the clients we saw had to wait, not once did they complain, try to attack us or talk down to the staff. Wish we could have that right?
Besides the work days, the people in Johannesburg were very hospitable. Customer service was top tier. The food…. oh la la……
Shopping… well, you need to exercise a lot of self control… Since the dollar goes a long way.
Let me tell you. I was getting shea butter( why not.. its better than lotion) , eating good food with drink and getting quality clothing
I’m reminiscing already…..
Yes, I would go back and can’t wait to go back..
